Mission San Xavier del Bac is a historic Spanish Catholic mission located about 10 miles south of downtown Tucson, Arizona, on the Tohono O'odham San Xavier Indian Reservation. The mission was built between 1783 and 1797. The mission is a beautifully preserved gem of the late Baroque style of New Spain. The interior is richly decorated with ornaments showing a mixture of New Spain and Native American artistic motifs. At least three different artists painted the artwork inside the church. It is considered by many to be the finest example of Spanish mission architecture in the United States. There is a series of domes and arches that create enclaves for themes of painting on the various walls, domes and rooms. During the 1990's restoration process they hired painters who worked on the restoration of the Sistine Chapel to do some of their interior repairs. Princess Room This room has a bed that swung from the rafters in the middle of the room. The walls were completely painted in chalkboard paint, and the artist decorated it with the theme of "The Princess and the Pea." interior decorating theme Interior designer David Naylor embraces the broad range of possibilities presented by a world of materials old and new, of objects both found and manufactured. He calls his approach "infusion design," by which he means capturing the ideas of the Old World without forgetting about the present, stirring melting pots of cultures and allowing opposites to coexist, and pulling together objects from around the world. The timelessness, natural warmth, and adaptability of the popular Southwestern style aesthetic provide an appealing backdrop for his interpretations, which eschew the cliches while retaining the essence. The architectural elements of the region-round beams, adobe walls, natural wood finishes-create a versatile aesthetic that can embrace an infinite variety of designs, while the nomadic nature of Americans generally, who move freely about the country bringing their favorite decor items with them, makes for limitless opportunities to infuse designs with intriguing juxtapositions and unexpected placements.
