"Sherwood" a Large Queen Anne Villa - Essendon

"Sherwood" is a splendid Queen Anne style villa situated in one of the finer areas of the inner northern Melbourne suburb of Essendon. Built purposely on an elevation to take advantage of its location on the crest of a hill, it affords splendid views from its twin bay windows which flank the front door, across the inner nothern and eastern suburbs of Melbourne all the way to the Dandenongs on the far east horizon

Queen Anne style was mostly a residential style inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement in England, but also encompassed some of the more stylised elements of Art Nouveau, which gave it an more decorative look. The rough cast stuccoed brick wall treatment of the villa is in keeping with the Arts and Crafts movement, as is the terracotta tiled roof and the shingled panels that can be found under the eaves. Yet the stained glass panels in the windows are all very Art Nouveau in design, whilst the porch canopy has an almost pagoda like Oriental style to it.

Queen Anne style was most popular around the time of Federation. With complex roofline structures and undulating facades, many Queen Anne houses fell out of fashion at the beginning of the modern era, and were demolished.

Essendon was etablished in the 1860s and became an area of affluence and therefore only had middle-class, upper middle-class and some very wealthy citizens. A large villa like this built in one of the finer pockets of the suburb suggests that it was built for an aspiring upper middle-class family of some means. This villa would have required a small retinue of servants to maintain.

"Ardglass" a Large Queen Anne Villa - Essendon

"Ardglass" is a splendid Queen Anne style villa situated in one of the finer areas of the inner northern Melbourne suburb of Essendon. Built on the crest of a hill, it affords splendid views from its bay and attic windows, across the inner nothern and eastern suburbs of Melbourne all the way to the Dandenongs on the far east horizon.

Queen Anne style was mostly a residential style inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement in England, but also encompassed some of the more stylised elements of Art Nouveau, which gave it an more decorative look. The red brick from which the villa is built is in keeping with the Arts and Crafts movement (although it has been painted in later years), as is the terracotta tiled roof and the rough cast stuccoed brick half timbered panels that can be found under the eaves. Yet the ornate fretwork of the return verandah, the terracotta finial on the gables and the stained glass panels in the windows are all very Art Nouveau in design.

First Presbyterian - Tiffany Holy Spirit Window, Silk Square

The shimmering Tiffany Dove Window that inspired this silk is also referred to as the Holy Spirit Window. In the mid-1890s, it was made and installed in the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield, Illinois, with whose congregation Abraham Lincoln worshipped for many years. The brilliance and iridescence of the Dove Window typify Louis Comfort Tiffany's now-legendary stained glass technique, in which he duplicated glass colors produced in ancient Troy and Cyprus. The myriad of jewel-toned colors along the border of this silk almost radiate light. The Dove at each corner reflects Spirit and beauty. The First Presbyterian Church of Springfield draws visitors from around the world because of its connection with Abraham Lincoln and his family. Far beyond this relationship, however, the church has made its mark on the city's history, politics and culture.
